Apple is reportedly developing a new smart doorbell camera with Face ID technology to unlock doors, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the latest Power On newsletter. The device could launch as early as late 2025, Gurman notes.
The doorbell camera would function similarly to Face ID on iPhones, automatically unlocking the door when a recognized resident looks at it. To ensure security, it would feature Apple’s Secure Enclave chip, which processes and stores Face ID data independently from the rest of the system. The camera is expected to be compatible with existing HomeKit-enabled smart locks, and Apple might collaborate with a smart lock company to offer a bundled system at launch. Additionally, the device could use Apple’s rumored “Proxima” Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which may also debut in future HomePod Mini and Apple TV updates.
This smart doorbell camera is part of a larger Apple effort to expand its smart home ecosystem, branded under Apple Intelligence. Other rumored developments include a new smart home camera, an Apple-branded TV, and innovative smart displays. One display could resemble an iPad that attaches magnetically to wall mounts or speaker bases, while another might feature a robotic arm connected to a larger base for dynamic functionality.
