DeepSeek<\/a>, the Chinese AI company, is drawing strong criticism from regulators worldwide. Its viral AI models and chatbot apps have been banned by an increasing number of countries and government bodies, which have raised concerns about DeepSeek\u2019s ethics, privacy, and security practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of corporations have also opted to ban DeepSeek, largely due to fears of potential data leakage to the Chinese government. According to DeepSeek\u2019s privacy policy<\/a>, the company stores all user data in China, where local laws require organizations to share data with intelligence officials upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As more regions restrict access to DeepSeek\u2019s apps, we will continue updating this roundup. The list also features the public sector departments that have prohibited DeepSeek technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following an investigation by Italy’s privacy watchdog into how DeepSeek<\/a> handles personal data, Italy became one of the first countries to ban the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late January, Italy’s Data Protection Authority (DPA)<\/a> launched an inquiry into DeepSeek\u2019s data collection practices and its compliance with the GDPR<\/a>, the EU regulation that governs the retention and processing of personal data. The DPA allotted DeepSeek 20 days to respond to questions about how and where the company stores user data, as well as the purposes for which this data is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeepSeek contended that its apps were not subject to EU law. However, Italy\u2019s DPA disagreed and subsequently removed DeepSeek\u2019s apps from the Apple and Google app stores in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiwan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of Digital Affairs has determined that DeepSeek<\/a> \u201cendangers national information security\u201d and, as a result, has prohibited government agencies from using the company\u2019s AI. In its statement, the ministry warned that public sector employees and critical infrastructure facilities face the risk of \u201ccross-border transmission and information leakage\u201d when employing DeepSeek\u2019s technology. This ban extends to government agency staff, as well as public schools and state-owned enterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement emphasized, \u201cDeepSeek AI service is a Chinese product. Its operation involves several information security concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Congress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

U.S. congressional offices have reportedly been cautioned against using DeepSeek<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Axios, the House\u2019s chief administrative officer (CAO)\u2014which delivers support services and business solutions to the House of Representatives\u2014sent out a notice to congressional offices indicating that DeepSeek<\/a> technology is currently “under review.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The notice stated, “[T]hreat actors are already exploiting DeepSeek to deliver malicious software and infect devices.” To address these risks, the House has implemented security measures that restrict DeepSeek\u2019s functionality on all House-issued devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios further reports<\/a> that the CAO has prohibited staff from installing DeepSeek applications on any official smartphones, computers, or tablets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Texas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an order banning software<\/a> from DeepSeek and other Chinese companies from government-issued devices in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Abbott said that Texas \u201cwill not allow the Chinese Communist Party to infiltrate our state\u2019s critical infrastructure through data-harvesting AI and social media apps. Texas will continue to protect and defend our state from hostile foreign actors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Navy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Navy has instructed its members not to use DeepSeek apps or technology<\/a>, according to CNBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late January, the Navy sent an email prohibiting service members from using DeepSeek products \u201cin any capacity\u201d due to \u201cpotential security and ethical concerns associated with the [tech\u2019s] origin[s] and usage.\u201d A Navy spokesperson told CNBC the email was in reference to the Department of the Navy\u2019s chief information officer\u2019s generative AI policy and based on an advisory from the Navy\u2019s cyber workforce manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the email, the Navy said it\u2019s \u201cimperative\u201d that members don\u2019t use DeepSeek\u2019s AI \u201cfor any work-related tasks or personal use,\u201d and \u201crefrain from downloading, installing, or using [DeepSeek AI].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pentagon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Pentagon has blocked access to DeepSeek technologies, but not before some staff accessed them<\/a>, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Defense Information Systems Agency, which is responsible for the Pentagon\u2019s IT networks, moved to ban DeepSeek\u2019s website in January, according to Bloomberg. The decision is said to have come after defense officials raised concerns that Pentagon workers were using DeepSeek\u2019s applications without authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg notes that while the prohibition remains in place, Defense Department personnel can use DeepSeek\u2019s AI through Ask Sage, an authorized platform that doesn\u2019t directly connect to Chinese servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

NASA has also banned employees from using DeepSeek tech. That\u2019s according to CNBC, which obtained a memo from the agency\u2019s chief AI officer informing personnel that DeepSeek\u2019s servers operate outside the U.S., raising national security concerns<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDeepSeek and its products and services are not authorized for use with NASA\u2019s data and information or on government-issued devices and networks,\u201d the memo said, per CNBC. \u201c[Employees are not authorized to] access DeepSeek via NASA devices and agency-managed network connections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
